Inside the May 1999 issue of Global Views Monthly, the curriculum of the Business Administrative Department of National Sun Yat-sen University was scored slightly lower than the ones of National Chengchi University and Taiwan Normal University and ranked third. Also, on June 2001’s China Late Newspaper, it was rated as the top three favorite programs among the leading five desires from senior high students.

Our department features the following “Five Excellences”:

1. Excellent Educational Objective

We are dedicated to cultivate our students to become the managing talents that possess “well-rounded” quality as well as professional skills, ethics, international view and vernacular sentiments. “Well-rounded” personnel refer to those that are always well behave, moderate, open-minded and flexible.

a. Professional skills - analysis, cogitation and decision-making

In the aspect of program design, we adopt the semester system to increase the depth and breadth of our students’ expertise. Our classes are coordinated through group discussion on cases and reports on individual research projects, intensifying students’ integrative thinking, communication and expression ability. In terms of delivering our experiences, aside from our distinguishing faculty, we have also specifically arranged our regular students to study with experienced working executives and students from continuing studies. Through the combination of academic rigor with a practical understanding of business, our students will learn and practice the essence of management intensively.

b. Ethics- Devotion, maturity and moderation

We aggressively encourage our students to participate in social services in order to enhance their willingness to serve people. It is hoped that after their entry to the society, they will behave in accordance with the principle of “Everyone’s benefit is yours benefits”, rather than to pursue individual’s fame and position and ignore one’s own social responsibilities.

We have been emphasizing on the balance of professionalism and devotion to encourage our students to join school clubs in order to learn to work, communicate, and negotiate with each another, read one’s mind through his words and expression, and increase team spirit.

c. International View- Foreign language, culture and prospect

Our students are educated to develop superior foreign language abilities, besides from offering professional language programs, we also request our students to pass language tests from TOEFL, TOEIC.

Our department is the first school that approved by Asia International Enterprises Education United Association. It offers international student exchange program with collaboration from overseas partners, such as California State University, University of Houston, University of Sweden and Victoria University in Canada. Students that have excellent academic performances may request to study abroad for one semester. In addition, we accept the exchange students from the above foreign universities. Under a better learning environment, complete program planning and language training, our students would gain an ideal internationalized learning effectiveness and thereby, causing our management education toward internationalization.

d. Vernacular sentiment- Community, local and society

We have been organizing community services to enhance the interaction among students, communities and societies. In addition, we have collaborated with the enterprises (The China Steel Corp., China Petroleum Corp.) to conduct research in order to increase students’ practical experiences and promote the interaction among students, professionals and society. While our students are aggressively approaching towards internationalization, they will not forget the root of our nation and will take on the necessary social responsibilities in the meantime.

2. Excellent Faculty:

a. Our faculty consists of many doctoral degrees in many countries: Currently there are 27 full-time professors with average age of 45, 96% hold doctoral degrees from prestigious universities in Taiwan, the United States, England, Japan and Germany. In addition, we have 20 part-time professors. All our professors possess management concepts and knowledge of different nations. Cohered by the professions of our faculty, our professors will expand our research and teaching fields and our students will widen their international vision.

b. The profession of our faculty covers every fields of management: All of our professors, full-time and part-time have vast professional management specialties, including organization, economy, strategy, marketing, direct selling, finance, accounting, production management, quality management, law, systematic thinking, international enterprises, management science, technology management. All the above courses are designed to increase students’ learning opportunities.

c. Prosperous academic accomplishment: We emphasize strongly on academic research. Every year, many of our professors receive grants form National Science Council. Aside from their papers being published on national academic journals, some of our professors’ paper also published in first-rate international academic journals, such as Accounting Review, Management Sciences, Operation Research, American Journal of sociology and American Sociological Review.

d. Innovative research and teaching: The department of our faculty consistently innovates their research and teaching domain, e.g. systematic thinking, organizational learning, fifth element discipline, direct selling management, enterprise management are the key aspects of this field.

3. Excellent Teaching and Research Environment:

a. Elaborate professional program: Our curriculum-oriented courses are designed to provide diversifying learning experiences and strengthen the professional knowledge acquired by our students. Courses offered are international business, finance, accounting, organization and human resource management, law and enterprise, marketing management, broadcasting management, e-Commerce, direct selling, technology management, e-Enterprise, international exchanges, and other special programs tailor to every student’s need.

b. International exchange students: Every year, there are around ten masters and undergraduates studying abroad for one semester in order to gain valuable learning experiences. So far, universities that are collaborated with us for student exchange programs spreading over the United States, Canada, France, Sweden, Australia, Holland, Hungary and Finland.

c. Equal emphasizes on theory and practice: To equally emphasize on the theory and practice, we have been consistently developing courses with equal weighted theory and practice. We often invite the experienced entrepreneurs to be our guest speakers, for example, we have invited the senior executives from McDonalds, Uni-President 7-Eleven and The China Steel Corp. during the speech of “Business Management Focus”. We also provide internships and organize field trips for our students. Through these arrangements, we hope our students will have the hands on practice of management as well as the understanding of external trend. Moreover, we have organized our regular master students to study with the experienced and accomplished working executives in order to share their experiences among each other.

d. Advance Research and Teaching Resource: We have established various research laboratories and centers, e.g. Organizational learning lab, Mainland China Business Research Lab, Direct Selling Research Center, Research and Training Center for small to medium business in Southern Taiwan to promote the integration of research in academic and practices.

4. Excellent Students:

a. Undergraduate students who are admitted to school through application and distributed according to the exam score, or master students who are admitted to school by passing the written exam and oral interviews are all exceptional.

b. In compliance with the return educational policy of Ministry of Education, we have been accepting the experienced working personnel and nurture them to be the managers that are prepared for all level of tasks.

5. Prior Interaction with the Society:

a. Provide advance education opportunities for businessman and organize some extended educational courses, including the continuing education programs, non-credit courses at both undergraduate and master level, which receive wide acclaim. Over the years, the number of graduates from our programs has exceeded 10,000.

b. Closely interact with schools, society and enterprises as well as sign agreement with enterprises that would offers scholarships, summer internships and communication, e.g. Yuanta Security.

III. Key Developments:

a. Fulfill the educational objective of the department: We dedicate to nurture our students into the managing talents that possess “well-rounded” quality as well as professional skills, ethics, international view and vernacular sentiments.

b. Improve the cooperative research among the professors within the same department in order to amplify the overall effectiveness and enhance the standard of our academic research.

c. Encourage professors to develop new courses and innovative teaching methods in order to enhance overall educational quality.
